Are your Microsoft Teams video recordings eating up valuable storage space? You certainly aren't alone! In a brilliantly helpful tutorial by RA Solutions, we discovered a lesser-known feature within Teams that allows you to save your meetings purely as audio files.

This simple tweak is an absolute game-changer for anyone looking to optimise their storage, maintain participant privacy, and keep their files organised. Let’s dive in and see how it works!

🎧 Step-by-Step Guide: How to Record Audio Only in Teams

It is incredibly easy to switch your recording settings once you know where to look. Just follow these simple steps during your next meeting:

  • Step 1: Whilst in your Microsoft Teams meeting, look at the top menu bar and click on More (the ellipses icon)

  • Step 2: From the dropdown menu, hover over the first option, which is Record and transcribe

  • Step 3: From the expanded options, select Start recording

  • Step 4: A confirmation window will pop up. Here is the crucial part that many people miss! Look for More options and click to expand it

  • Step 5: You'll see that the default setting for what to record is currently set to "Video and audio". Change this to Audio only

  • Step 6: Finally, click Confirm. You will see a message confirming that the recording (and transcription) has started.

✨ The Benefits of Audio-Only Recordings

Why should you consider making the switch? There are a few standout benefits to ditching the video feed:

  • Maximise Storage Space: Video files are notoriously large and bulky. By switching to an audio-only recording, you drastically reduce the file size, taking up far less space on your device

  • Enhanced Privacy: Not everyone is comfortable having their face recorded on camera. This option completely bypasses the cameras and respects participants' privacy whilst still capturing all the vital meeting discussions

  • Quicker Sharing & Uploads: Because the file takes up a fraction of the space, it's much faster to upload onto third-party software, archive, or share with colleagues (Note: The final audio file will still be saved as an MP4 file, but it won't display any video or faces).

💡 Final Thoughts

Next time you need to keep a record of your Teams meeting, ask yourself whether you really need the visual footage. Switching to audio-only is a fantastic, simple habit to help keep your digital workspace lean and tidy.
